Planting & Care

Plant your Victory Firethorn in a hole that is wide, but not deep. The plant should be level with the surrounding soil. Make sure to loosen the potting soil and roots around the root ball once you’ve placed it in the hole. Clay or sandy soils should be amended with organic matter. After planting, add 1-3 inches thick of mulch, but avoid getting too close to the stem. Water deeply to settle the roots.

Watering: During the establishment period, or the first couple of years, water your plant frequently. Depending on your rainfall, water every couple days. After your plant is established, you will not need to water unless you experience a heavy drought, at which time you may need to water every 10 days.

Fertilization: In late winter, add 2-3 oz per sq. yd of balanced general purpose fertilizer along with 2-3 of mulch.

Pruning: When pruning, wear thick gloves as this plant is very thorny. Prune off any diseases or dead branches, but keep as much 2 year old wood as possible. If your shrub is free standing, prune in mid-spring.

Training: If you’d like to train the shape of your plant, prune as directed above in mid-spring. Additionally, you may also shorten shoots as desired. In late summer, you can also trim all the sideshoots just short of the beery clusters. You can tie the new leafy shoots into wires to shape the new growth into whatever shape you like.

Hedging: To keep your Victory as a hedge, prune to shape 3 times spring and summer, keeping as many berries as possible.
